ROCK N’ ROLL PRESIDENT (2008)

By: Michael McHugh

Verse:

We had an actor, a peanut farmer, we had some rich mens’sons-

We had some framers, a piano player, a saxman in the sun-

They all tried to do what’s best- they tried to do what’s right-

A statesman who could barely walk, he got us through the night!

Chorus:

Your next White House resident should be a Rock n’ roll President!

For all the folks who’ve given up on the United States of Love!

Verse:

Seein’ through the fog of war, this one’s the real thing-

make way for the infidels who make freedom ring!

Dancing with the Ozone Man as the glaciers melt-

Corporations do not care, they just go for the gelt!

(Chorus)

If I’m called I will serve, I’ll try and do my best-

We all know it’s a tough job-

I’ll rise to the test-

Write me in The Son Of A Nation if you don’t well oh

I guess I’ll be Commander of Chief of Rock n’roll!

(Chorus) ...for all the folks who thinks it sucks/dig these United States of Love!

    tune in

tune in

get turned on

drop out

go back

get back

to yer woods

all this material craving

is so Un-Zen

all this striving for stardom

i'm heading out to nature

you can sell my poems and songs

after i'm gone

into ethereal spirit

celestial smoke

rising up

i will eventually return to the tribe

and dance around your fire

and warm your pop charts with my bold new sound

but first the revolution must happen

in my own mind

tune in

get turned on

let me worship it

let me feel it

deep inside

the breakthrough

must come first

from within

as for being a star

does it really matter?

as long as i shine

as long as i don't become a black hole

of negativity

cause my rocknroll dream went bust

c'est la vie!

tune in

get turned on

and blast off

it's time to get enlightened

off to the desert to commune with Jesus

off to the desert to hang with Don Juan and Jim Morrison

tune in

off to the Garden of Eden

to tell the Archangel Raphael

"Hey Dude- open the gate- we're coming back in"

Will we get back into Eden?

God only knows.

IT’S THOSE HOMOS AGAIN

By: Malcom Lagauche

The U.S. Marines are incredibly adept at killing people. Most know 1,583 methods of killing somebody and re-arranging the victim’s body parts within five seconds. However, some were not taught a basic trait that encompasses all of humanity: when to keep your mouth shut.

Yesterday, the Chairman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (U.S.), Marine General Peter Pace, made some statements that prove he does not know when to keep quiet. I suppose he feels that an 18-star general has the right to publicly berate individuals. They also have the right to practice an act that is not illegal in the U.S.: stupidity.

According to the New York Times:

"I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts, he (Pace) said. I do not believe the United States is well-served by a policy that says it is O.K. to be immoral in any way."

The subject of gays and lesbians in the U.S. military is like the Energizer Bunny: it just keeps going and going. In the 1990s, an official program called "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" was implemented by the U.S. military. The subject was supposed to be closed.

However, according to the 10th Annual Report of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), more than 10,000 gay or lesbian individuals have been released from their duties (active military or civilian defense positions) since 1994 because of their sexual orientation. In other words "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" is not the same as "Don’t Get Fired."

The reasons for not allowing gays into the U.S. military are preposterous. Most opponents of gay servicepeople assess that the homosexual soldier may become a hazard to his/her comrades because they are housed in the same areas and use the same shower facilities. They also maintain that during battle, a gay soldier may not be as good as a heterosexual because he may be distracted by the sea of males surrounding him.

I have seen many short videos of battles between the U.S. military and the Iraqi resistance. They are violent, quick and brutal. I doubt there has ever been one incident of a gay soldier, protecting himself behind a tank who stated to a soldier in front of him, "Nice ass, corporal."

Pace speaks of morals, yet he is the number one U.S. military person behind one of the most immoral acts in the history of our planet: the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. I have yet to hear him speak out about the millions of Iraqi citizens who have died since 1991 because of U.S. military activities and the keeping in place of the deadly embargo against Iraq. Maybe he thinks that is moral.

Homophobia is not exclusively a U.S. phenomenon. It is universal.

The Iraqi quisling government is masterful and it practices and condones the killing of gay Iraqis, all the time right under the noses of their U.S. bosses.

Ayatollah Sistani has published a fatwa calling for the deaths of all gay and lesbian Iraqis using the most vile methods available. The stooges have taken him at his word and have killed thousands of gay and lesbian Iraqis.

Some have fled to Britain and are attempting to bring to the world’s attention the current slaughter in Iraq. Nobody seems to care. Not one U.S. official has uttered a word about this genocide. Imagine if this happened under Saddam. The U.S. would be speaking of it 24 hours a day and demand his head. But, Saddam is dead and the current violence against gays in Iraq can not be attributed to him. In a way, Saddam’s death may be helpful in assessing the real criminals in Iraq. Since March 2003, the U.S. can no longer say, "Saddam did it."

Until about six months ago, there were some "safe" houses in Iraq for gays and lesbians where people would meet and discuss methods of leaving Iraq or keeping out of view of the Iraqi police and death squads. Today, most, if not all, of the safe houses have been discovered.

There are no exact figures of how many gays and lesbians have been killed in Iraq since the demise of the prior regime. But, it must be in the thousands.

Just last week, a U.N. report was released that stated in excess of 34,000 Iraqis had been killed in the first six months of 2005. An Iraqi stooge spokesman challenged the number. He said it was inaccurate because homosexuals were included in the number of dead. In other words, homosexuals are not human.

Where is the U.S. when statements like this come from their own appointed Iraqi traitors? There is only silence. This lack of response from the U.S. must mean only one thing: the government (Republicans and Democrats) must agree with the housecleaning of gays and lesbians in Iraq. Who are the real immoral people: homosexuals or the millions of people who ignore the massacre of Iraqi homosexuals? My feeble atheist brain can not understand how the roles of the players in this scenario have been reversed. Then again, I don’t read the Bible. To those homophobic Christians who cite the Bible for their bigotry, I am just as immoral as homosexuals. We are in the same boat. Oops, I shouldn’t have said that. Maybe, while in that boat, a homosexual will try to accost me. I won’t ask if he won’t tell.

As I wrote this piece, I received an e-mail message from a reader in Canada. He has something to say to General Pace. I’ll conclude with his remarks:

Dear Mr. Pace:
If you do talk about morality here, let me tell you that your little wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the war against terrorism, which isn't a war, since that is not what terrorism means, are the most immoral things the world has ever seen since it was created about 6000 years ago (with your views, you simply must be one of those believers...) Close all of them down now, and you just might be able to judge on other things, even on the price gouging of your oil companies, and your generally most wasteful society. Up to that point, will you please SHUT UP!

Afterword: Pace’s first name is Peter. In the U.S., this is a commonly-used slang name for "penis." Just think, he could be called "Penis Pace." It seems to have a good ring to it. Very appropriate as well.

TALKING MILKSHAKE HOLDS BOSTON HOSTAGE

By: Malcom Lagauche

www.malcomlagauche.com

In 1938, Orson Welles, then a young radio presenter for Mercury Theater on the Air, broadcast a Halloween special narration of the H.G. Well’s classic War of the Worlds. His depiction was so real that much of the U.S. panicked and thought the country was under attack from Martians.

A few days ago, a similar incident occurred in Boston, however, the results are even more preposterous than the migration of people in 1938 who listened to Orson Welles’ broadcast. The city of Boston was virtually shut down and brought to a standstill over the promotion of an obscure cartoon series that stars a talking milkshake whose comrades are a box of fries and a meatball.

Throughout Boston, and eight other U.S. cities, dozens of one-foot high blinking electronic devices were placed a few weeks ago. The cartoon on the devices included graphic-like figures making an obscene one-fingered gesture. Then, on Wednesday, for some unknown reason, Boston officials panicked and thought the devices may have been planted by terrorists.

According to the Associated Press:

In nine cities across the country, blinking electronic signs displaying a profane, boxy-looking cartoon character caused barely a stir.

But in Boston, the signs — some with protruding wires — sent a wave of panic across the city, bringing out bomb squads and prompting officials to shut down highways, bridges and part of the Charles River …

Tracy O’Connor, 34, a retail manager, called the police response "silly and insane," contrasting it with other cities where no one reported concerns about the devices — an advertising gimmick for the Cartoon Network show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force."

The two people responsible for the placement of the figures in Boston (Peter Berdovsky and Sean Stevens) were apprehended and held a press conference. They gave a short response about hairstyles in the 1970s and appeared to be amused. However, authorities have promised to leave no stone unturned in prosecuting them. They could face up to five years in prison.

Public officials in Boston are irate and have blamed the couple for intentionally trying to terrorize the public. This is a problematic assumption considering that the figures had been prominently displayed for three weeks before any action was taken. Maybe Boston officials should be tried instead of the creative artists. After all, it was they who created a panic scenario, not Berdovsky and Stevens.

Throughout the day, TV stations showed the reactions of various law enforcement agencies in the U.S. to the Boston panic. In the Seattle, Washington area, authorities said the devices were "obviously not suspicious."

I saw an MSNBC video clip of King County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Urquhart discussing the issue. At first, he was serious and attempted not to defame Boston authorities, but he could not hold a straight face. He spoke a couple of words, then began snickering. He composed himself and before he could speak again, he broke out in raucous laughter. Despite there being a "blue line" under which police never criticize publicly their brothers and sisters in law enforcement, Urquhart could not contain his display of the silliness of the incident. When he was able to utter a coherent statement, he said, "People don’t need to be concerned about this. These are cartoon characters giving the finger."

Boston officials are red-faced. It cost the city $750,000 to implement its bogus shutting down of the city. Unfortunately, they will turn the situation around and try to put a couple of young, creative people in prison. It was the stupidity and errors in judgement of the city officials that created the panic, not a silly cartoon character giving a one-finger salute. This gesture now becomes a symbol that is applicable to all the Boston officials who are trying to disguise their embarrassment.

ON THE MICHAEL RICHARDS OUTBURST
BY: Evan Ginzburg

It was reported in the media this week that a while back Michael
Richards allegedly made anti-semitic comments at a comedy show as well.

As an adult ESL (English Second Language) teacher I also get quite
upset at the now regular anti-immigrant commentary in the media. Having
taught thousands of students over nearly twenty years, I can assure the
world that plenty of immigrants "want to learn English."

I've also heard enough "Let's just nuke Iraq" idiocy, that the
mentality of many in this country is frightening to me.

And as a lover of music of all genres, I have a warm-spot in my heart
for "oldies shows." But I'm inevitably taken aback by the snide
commentary of young writers who inevitably are dismissive of the "balding
audience" or "blue haired" old people.  In their eyes it's "corny" if you
will. It's as if seeing a great like Little Anthony, Felix Cavalier, or
Johnny Maestro is somehow a lesser form of entertainment. And this is
in popular newsstand publications, so I guess ageism is somehow
acceptable in print. Hey, in some cultures, elders are revered, not mocked.

In short, I think that there's a whole lot of stuff simmering in
America...a whole lot of stuff...

GREEN REVOLUTIONS IN CUBA AND VENEZUELA

BY: Malcom Lagauche

When most people hear the word "revolution" about either Cuba or Venezuela, images of the Cuban revolution of the 1950s with Fidel Castro at the forefront, or of Hugo Chavez giving a scathing speech attacking U.S. imperialism are brought to mind. However, both countries are today experiencing a revolution in the way their people eat.

After the Soviet Union dropped Cuba like a hot potato, the island country found itself without finances. At that time, Cuba imported much of its food, so it had to change its methods to feed its citizens. The Independent daily newspaper of Great Britain ran a story on August 8, 2006, titled, "The Good Life in Havana: Cuba’s Green Revolution." According to the article:

Twenty years ago, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Fidel Castro’s small island faced a food crisis. Today, its networks of small urban farmers is thriving, an organic success story that is feeding the nation …

… Mr. Salcines and his small urban farm at Alamar, an eastern suburb of the capital, Havana, are at the center of a social transformation that may turn out to be as important as anything else that has been achieved during Castro’s 47 years in power.

Spurred into action by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the disastrous impact on its subsidized economy, the government of Cuba was forced to take radical steps to feed its people. The solution it chose — essentially unprecedented both within the developed and underdeveloped world — was to establish a self-sustaining system of agriculture that by necessity was essentially organic.

Laura Enriquez, a sociologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who has written extensively on the subject of Latin American agriculture, said, "What happened in Cuba was remarkable. It was remarkable that they decided to prioritize food production. Other countries in the region took the neo-liberal option and exported ‘what they were good at’ and imported food. The Cubans went for food security and part of that was prioritizing small farmers."

Today, there are more than 7,000 plots occupying more than 81,000 acres on which organic food is farmed in Cuba. Many of these are located in urban areas as well as rural venues. In Havana, there are more than 200 gardens, some in small spaces between tower block estates, that supply the city’s population with more than 90% of their fruit and vegetables. The farmers are obligated to farm a certain amount of products for the Cuban government. The surplus then belongs to the farmers who sell it for profit, which is divided among them.

This method of producing food has supplied work for thousands of Cubans. Their employment is not dependent upon the whims of international finance.

Currently, the Cuban system of organic farming and distribution, is being implemented in Caracas, Venezuela.

April M. Howard wrote an article called "Feeding Ourselves: Organic Urban Gardens in Caracas, Venezuela" that appeared on www.venezuelanalysis.com on August 10, 2006. According to Howard:

In the middle of the modern, concrete city of Caracas, Venezuela, Norali Venezuela is standing in a garden dressed in jeans and work boots. She is the director of the Organoponico Boliver, the first urban organic garden to show its green face in the heart of the city of Caracas …

… To Venezuelans, the garden represents a shift in the ways that Venezuelans get their food. "People are waking up," she (Venezuela) told the press. We’ve been dependent on McDonald’s and Wendy’s for so long. Now people are learning to eat what we can produce ourselves" …

… The Oganoponicos are inspired by similar projects that sprung up in Cuba after the fall of the Soviet bloc, this means that Venezuelans would buy and consume food grown in Venezuela, as opposed to the current situation in which, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Venezuela imports about 80 percent of the food that it consumes.

Currently, Cuba is entirely independent from the outside world for its food needs. Venezuela is moving toward a similar autonomy.

There could be a monkey wrench in the future for Cuba’s astute program, however. Lately, with Fidel Castro recuperating from an operation, much speculation has been spoken about Cuba’s future. The U.S. government (Republicans and Democrats alike) are speaking about bringing "freedom" to the Cuban people.

If such an unfortunate occurrence comes forth, we have Iraq to look at as an example of some of the "freedoms" brought about by U.S. interference. In Iraq, Paul Bremer, the U.S. viceroy who set up the regulations for a "free" Iraq, posted 100 edicts before he left his post: edicts that can not be broken by successive Iraqi governments. Edict #81 forbids Iraqi farmers from using seeds of their previous crops, a farming method had been in existence for 5,000 years in Iraq. Iraqi farmers now must purchase genetically-modified seeds from Monsanto for their crops. This is a rule that is tightly regulated. Inspectors frequently visit farmers in Iraq to ensure acquiescence. If a farmer uses his own seeds, he is heavily fined.

How can this happen? It’s quite simple. Monsanto takes a seed of a crop, copies it and manufactures the seeds. Once the seed is copied, Monsanto then acquires a patent for the seed design. In other words, any natural seeds with the same patented design become illegal to use.

If Cuba is "freed" by the U.S., there will be an immediate end to Cuban farmers using their own seeds. Then, Cubans will no longer be able to purchase readily-available organic foods at a low price.

In reading about the Cuban and Venezuelan programs, the merit of self-sufficiency and economics play a major factor. However, one point is missing from most of the reports: the health component.

If more than 90% of Cubans, and a growing number of Venezuelans, eat a diet consisting of organic foods, they will become much healthier than the people of industrialized societies whose diets consist mostly of processed, artificial, sugar-laden foods that are slowly poisoning them to death.

Obesity and diabetes are at all-time highs in the U.S. More than 50% of the population are considered overweight. Currently, there are 21 million U.S. citizens who suffer from diabetes. Health experts predict that within 10 years, that figure will be a staggering 45 million. This is an easy prediction because experts follow the degradation of the U.S. diet and can accurately predict the results for a 10-year period.

Before I wrote this article, I performed a little research on diabetes in the U.S. and Cuba. In Cuba, there are about 300,000 people with diabetes. The country has an active educational program on diabetes that begins with school kids.

The Cuban rate of diabetes is about 1/7 of that in the U.S. Of the top at-risk populations for diabetes in the U.S., Cuban-Americans come in at third place, a very high-risk figure.

One does not have to be Einstein to figure out why Cuban-Americans are at such a high risk for diabetes. Their gene pools are similar to those on the island 90 miles off the coast of Florida, so it is not genetic. They are at risk because they have succumbed to the U.S. diet of fast food and junk food.

Possibly, opponents of U.S. imperialism and hegemony should consider patience as a countering force for standing up to Uncle Sam. Within a couple of decades, the U.S. citizenry just may eat itself to death.

CRAZED NEGROES & MARIJUANA ARE JUST UN-AMERICAN

by Malcom Lagauche

I have smoked my last joint. Last night, I threw away my roaches, my rolling papers and roach clip. Despite my occasional use of the herb, I did not realize that I was putting my health in danger as well as contributing to the decline of American civilization and culture.

The determining factor in my choice has been the frequent editorials in the San Diego Union-Tribune which have enlightened me to the perils of marijuana. For instance, in criticizing Judge Richard Posner for advocating the legalization of marijuana, the daily paper stated, "If Posner’s will were to prevail, and marijuana were legalized, America would move a step closer to becoming a nation of junkies."

As scary as it may seem that we could turn into a nation of junkies, that was not reason enough for my rejecting the weed. After all, according to the Union-Tribune, I already qualified as a junkie, so, at least the number of social deviants would not increase by my still smoking marijuana.

No, it was the health warning that scared me. The Union-Tribune has stated, " ... while most tobacco and alcohol users don’t graduate to illegal narcotics, many (if not most) marijuana users move on to even harder drugs ... it not only is a dangerous drug in its own right, but also a ‘gateway’ drug to harder narcotics like cocaine, heroin, and LSD."

At first, I thought these messages were merely replays of the 1939 anti-marijuana propaganda film "Reefer Madness," but I began to ask myself, "Why are they saying these things?" My conclusion was that the newspaper must have current information of which I was unaware. I have never used cocaine, heroin or LSD despite my decade-and-a-half-long use of marijuana. Many of my friends like to light up occasionally as well, yet none has used the "harder" drugs, so I deduced that the impending addiction to hard drugs must be a delayed reaction and that if I stopped using marijuana now, it would decrease my chances of becoming a derelict addicted to heroin.

After my choice, I conducted further research and found a quote from 1937 which is attributed to H. Randolph Hearst, the publishing tycoon. His newspapers editorially stated, " ... after they smoke their marijuana, the crazed Negroes then play their barbaric music."

What a powerful message! The music of the "crazed Negroes" of the time was jazz and blues. By the early 1950s, some of these "crazed Negroes" had combined their music forms to introduce a new kind of music to the world — rock n’ roll. This depraved music has led to the downfall of our society and it all came about because of marijuana. If the "crazed Negroes" had not smoked the deadly herb, they would have had to have been content with playing their banjoes and fiddles just like their white brethren.

Now I was beginning to see the overall picture — marijuana not only is a dangerous drug that leads to hard drug addiction, it also is a catalyst in the destruction of our society. In addition, I do not want to be considered "un-American." The events of September 11, 2001, have led our government to state "either you are with us or against us," therefore, every American citizen should unquestionably do what our government says.

To be frank, I had never put the pieces of the puzzle together, despite my background as an investigative journalist. Now that I have been enlightened, I must mention a positive step in our society that may eliminate marijuana use and, at the same time, deprive our country of the music of the "crazed Negroes" — the emergence of Country and Western music as America’s favorite lyrical and melodic choice.

Let’s face it. What other music portrays the greatness of America better than C&W? All the artistic and cultural majesties of our country are heard on the airwaves that highlight country music — pickup trucks with gun-racks, alcoholism, incest and violence.

We must stop listening to namby-pamby music that glorifies love, beauty and justice. These concepts are just not American. As a matter of fact, they are just as un-American as marijuana. The "crazed Negroes" and their white trash allies who play rock n’ roll must not be allowed to further erode our values and standards. After all, many clergymen have told us of the evils of rock n’ roll. Who better can we trust than our religious leaders?

Another positive conclusion came from ensuing articles in the San Diego Union-Tribune. The editorials assured me that alcohol users rarely graduate to illegal drugs. This is comforting if I try to substitute a new item to help me get by withdrawal symptoms and cure me of my past marijuana addiction. Evidently, the use of alcohol does not harm one’s health and it must not be addictive. I have not touched a drop of alcohol in over 30 years — I am not a drinker. However, I may start now, but I will not begin until I experience severe withdrawal symptoms. Surprisingly, I have not had any heebie-jeebies yet from the cold-turkey elimination of marijuana from my system.

For the first time, my head is clear. My only problem is that I still have no taste for Country and Western music and I still enjoy rock n’ roll. I am sure that my quandary will clear up in time. If the addiction to C&W music is a delayed reaction, similar to my impending addiction to hard drugs, then I must wait for my musical tastes to change. Possibly, the adjustment will be curbed for a long, long time.
